Upper arm lift for bat wings
In combination with age-related changes, genetic factors and the influence of gravity, or even after massive weight loss – whether through personal initiative, dietary changes or bariatric surgery (such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy) – excess skin can develop on the inner upper arm, causing cosmetic concerns and functional problems.
The inner arms in particular then develop an unattractive excess of skin and fat, which usually does not disappear despite exercise and targeted muscle training. These changes are colloquially referred to as "bat wings".
About the treatment
In cases of severely sagging skin, a surgical upper arm lift (brachioplasty) is recommended. The procedure is performed via a vertical incision on the inside of the arm, which, depending on the severity of the condition, extends from the armpit to just above the elbow. This technique allows for excess skin to be removed effectively.
If there is also excess fat, the operation can easily be combined with fat removal (liposuction) to achieve a harmonious and smooth result. When it an excess of skin is the only issue, then skin resection alone is sufficient.

FAQs
Could the scar cause functional impairment?
Not usually. The scar runs along the inside of the arm and is positioned so that mobility and function are not impaired. Good aftercare and adherence to the recommended rest periods are important in order to avoid adhesions or feelings of tightness.
What should I do if the result is unsatisfactory?
If the result is not as desired – e.g. due to wound healing complications, scarring or skin irregularities – corrective surgery can be performed. However, this is only advisable after complete healing (approx. 6 to 12 months). As a rule, such procedures are rarely necessary, as the result can be easily planned.
Can I see the scar when I look at myself in the mirror from front on?
The scar is located on the inside of the upper arm and is usually not visible from the front when standing in a normal posture. It is only easily visible when the arms are raised to the side or under certain lighting conditions. Over time, it usually fades significantly.
How long after the upper arm lift do I have to wear compression sleeves?
Patients are advised to wear compression sleeves for a period of 6 weeks after the procedure. This supports the healing process and ensures an optimised arm contour.
