What is hyperhidrosis and how does botulinum toxin help?
Hyperhidrosis describes excessive sweating, often limited to the armpits, hands or feet. Hyperhidrosis refers to excessive sweating that occurs either without any apparent physical cause (primary hyperhidrosis) or as a result of other illnesses (secondary hyperhidrosis). Although it does not pose a direct health risk, it can seriously impact on a person’s daily life. This form of sweating is independent of temperature or physical activity and can significantly reduce quality of life.
Treatment with botulinum toxin is tried and tested, targeting the nerve endings responsible for sweat gland activity. Fine injections into the affected areas reduce or completely stop perspiration for several months – safely, effectively and without any downtime.
About the treatment
Botulinum toxin is injected directly into the affected areas of skin – usually the armpits, palms or soles of the feet. The effects can be seen after 3 to 7 days and last for approximately 6 months. The treatment can be repeated regularly and is very well tolerated.
Typical areas of application
- Armpits (axillae)
- Palms
- Soles of the feet
When is it recommended?
- For severe localised sweating with no apparent cause
- When deodorants, antiperspirants or other treatments do not work
- In cases of psychological distress or functional impairment
- Before important occasions or to improve quality of life
FAQs
What side effects may occur?
Botulinum toxin treatment for excessive sweating is generally well tolerated. Potential (largely temporary) side effects include:
Mild pain or redness at the injection site, small bruises (haematomas), temporary muscle weakness, especially with injections in the hands or feet. Rarer side effects include: Headaches, flu-like symptoms or allergic reactions.
Most patients tolerate the therapy without any problems and can get straight back to their daily routines.
Will health insurance cover the costs of treatment?
In Switzerland, coverage by the health insurance fund is not always guaranteed. In some cases – e.g. in cases of severe hyperhidrosis with medical necessity – partial or full costs may be covered. This usually requires a medical certificate or a corresponding application. It is best to clarify the cost coverage in advance by contacting your health insurance company directly.
How often can I repeat the treatment?
The treatment for sweating can be repeated as often as desired, as long as it is well tolerated. The effects usually last for 6 months. Many patients undergo treatment 1 or 2 times per year. Long-term side effects from repeated use are rare.
