  • Anaesthesia: General anaesthetic
  • Necessary time off sporting activities: 4–6 weeks

What is gynaecomastia?

An enlargement of the male breast or the formation of lumps should always be checked by a doctor, especially if the changes are new. As part of the BrustCare Breast Centre Zurich, we offer comprehensive diagnostics and individually tailored treatment.

Before surgery, an ultrasound examination and endocrinological assessment are necessary to determine the exact cause.

In most cases, it is a benign accumulation of fatty and/or glandular tissue. Treatment depends on the results of the examination:

  • In cases of fat accumulation alone or where the procedure is required for aesthetic reasons, liposuction (fat removal) may be sufficient.
  • Where additional glandular tissue is causing the condition, a combination of direct excision (removal) and extensive liposuction is performed.
  • If there is excess skin, a tightening procedure can also be performed.

The size and visibility of the scars vary depending on the surgical technique used – but these can usually be positioned discreetly.

About the treatment

Depending on the cause, treatment for gynaecomastia involves removing fat and/or glandular tissue, usually through liposuction, tissue removal or both – often supplemented by skin tightening.

Typical areas of application

  • Patients with visible enlargement of the male breast
  • Patients with an accumulation of fatty and/or glandular tissue
  • To relieve tightness or swelling
  • Patients experiencing psychological stress due to appearance

When is it recommended?

  • In the event of significant breast enlargement without regression
  • For patients experiencing pain or discomfort in the chest
  • Where impairment or asymmetry is highly visible
  • After ruling out other causes (e.g. hormonal disorders)
  • When there is a desire for aesthetic improvement

Treatment stages
1
Before the operation
For an accurate diagnosis, ultrasound examinations and hormone tests are carried out to determine the cause and extent of the gynaecomastia.
2
During the operation
Depending on the findings of the tests, fatty tissue is extracted, excess glandular tissue is removed, or both procedures are combined. If necessary, the skin is also tightened. The operation can usually be performed on an outpatient basis.
3
After the operation
Following the operation, a compression vest is recommended to support the healing process and reduce swelling. Physical rest and regular wound checks are required.
4
Possible risks and complications
As with any surgical procedure, there may be risks or complications. These include, for example, swelling, bruising, unattractive scarring and temporarily altered sensitivity.
FAQs

FAQs

Can I get breast cancer as a man?

Yes, men can also develop breast cancer, although it is much rarer than in women. It is important to have any changes or lumps in the breast checked by a doctor, regardless of gender.

As part of the BrustCare Breast Centre in Zurich, we offer comprehensive assessment and care, even in the case of rare diagnoses such as male breast cancer.

Will my health insurance company cover the costs?

Whether or not your health insurance company covers the costs of the procedure depends on the cause and medical necessity.
If gynaecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance or pathological changes, the costs may be covered in many cases.

If the treatment is purely for aesthetic reasons, it is usually carried out at the patient's own expense.
We are happy to assist you in clarifying this and can help with any applications to your health insurance company.

Will there be visible scars?

The scars from gynaecomastia surgery are usually small and discreet.
Depending on the technique used, the incision is usually made at the edge of the nipple or in combination with small suction incisions during liposuction.

In cases of significant excess skin, additional tightening may be necessary – this may result in slightly more visible scars, but these will be positioned as inconspicuously as possible.
