About the treatment

Modern breast implants are considered to be very safe and durable. Nevertheless, changes or complications may arise over time that require medical monitoring.

For example, the implant can in some cases rotate or, in rare cases, rupture. The body's natural reaction can also lead to capsular contracture – a thickening of the connective tissue capsule around the implant, which can cause symptoms such as hardening, pain or a change in breast shape.

In very rare cases, a link has been reported between more heavily textured implants and a condition called breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). One possible indication of this could be sudden build-up of fluid with swelling in the area of the implant, usually years after the operation. However, these symptoms may also have other, harmless causes.

Another very rare condition is breast implant illness (BII), which is not yet fully understood. This is a possible immunological reaction to silicone implants with general symptoms such as fatigue, skin changes, headaches or palpitations.

In order to detect any changes at an early stage, we recommend an initial ultrasound scan after 5 to 6 years, followed by regular check-ups every 2 to 3 years – in line with the recommendations of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA, 2020).

Our specialist consultations are carried out by a doctor specialising in plastic surgery working in partnership with experienced specialists in breast diagnostics. This is how we ensure comprehensive and reliable aftercare.

Typical areas of application

  • Routine check-ups for older breast implants
  • Suspected implant rupture or rotation
  • Symptoms such as pain, hardening or change in shape (indicating capsular contracture)
  • Noticeable build-up of fluid in the implant area
  • In the event of signs of rare complications, such as BIA-ALCL or BII
  • Patient’s desire to have implants removed for aesthetic or health reasons

When is it recommended?

  • First check-up 5 to 6 years after implant insertion
  • Then regular ultrasound or MRI checks every 2–3 years thereafter
  • In the event of sudden symptoms or visible changes
  • For long-term implant users (over 10 years), even without symptoms
  • If medically indicated to clarify unexplained symptoms or complaints

Treatment stages
1
Before the operation
Please bring all previous test results and documents relating to your breast implants to the health check.
2
During the operation
On the day of the health check consultation, we first conduct a thorough clinical examination. This is followed by a targeted ultrasound scan by experienced specialists at the affidea BrustCare Breast Centre in Zurich. This enables us to ensure a comprehensive assessment of the mammary gland tissue and lymph nodes. The consultation and ultrasound examination are painless and usually take 60 minutes. We will then discuss the results with you and plan further steps if necessary.
3
After the operation
You can resume your normal activities immediately after the examination. Should further checks or a procedure be necessary following the implant health check, we will discuss this during the consultation.
4
Possible risks and complications
No complications or risks are to be expected during these aftercare checks themselves.
FAQs

FAQs

Will I need to have my implants replaced after a certain period of time?

No, routine replacement after a certain period of time is not necessary with modern implants. As long as there are no abnormalities and no discomfort, implants can often remain in the body for many years without any problems. Regular check-ups help to detect changes at an early stage.

How can I tell if something is wrong with my implant?

Warning signs may include sudden changes in the shape or consistency of the breast, swelling, feelings of tightness or pain. Even if you have no symptoms, we recommend regular medical check-ups – especially ultrasound scans.

What happens if something unusual is found during the check-up?

Depending on the findings, we will explain the next steps to you individually. This may include advanced imaging, a period of observation or revision surgery. Our interdisciplinary care ensures that you are optimally informed and supported.
