Liposuction for lymphoedema

In advanced cases of lymphoedema, liposuction can remove diseased fatty tissue and reduce volume – but compression is still necessary afterwards.

The key facts

  • Duration of surgery: Approx. 2 hours
  • Necessary time off work: Approx. 2 weeks
  • Anaesthesia: General anaesthetic
  • Necessary time off sporting activities: 6 weeks
  • Type of care: Outpatient or inpatient

About the treatment

Advanced lymphoedema can lead to permanent growth of fatty tissue in the affected arm or leg. In such cases, fat removal (liposuction) can help to significantly reduce the volume and provide notable relief to the affected area.

The aim of this treatment is not to improve the lymph drainage malfunction, but to remove the pathologically altered tissue – thereby achieving a visible and noticeable slimming of the affected limb. Many patients report noticeable relief shortly after the procedure.

It is important to realise that daily compression therapy is still necessary even after the operation. This is the only way to prevent fluid from building up in the tissue again and the lymphoedema from increasing once more.

We would be happy to discuss whether this method is suitable for you during our lymphatic surgery consultation.

Typical areas of application

  • In cases of chronic, advanced lymphoedema with significant increase in fatty tissue
  • For secondary lymphoedema following tumour surgery, radiotherapy or lymph node removal
  • When unilateral or bilateral extremities are affected (arm or leg)
  • When conservative therapies such as compression, lymphatic drainage and exercise are no longer sufficient
  • In cases of significant functional impairment and discomfort in everyday life
  • For volume reduction and improvement of body image

When is it recommended?

  • When lymphoedema becomes chronic over many years and has led to increased fatty tissue
  • For cases of stable compression therapy and well-managed lymphoedema
  • When patients are motivated to continue compression consistently after surgery
  • For painful swelling, feeling of tightness or frequent inflammation
  • To improve quality of life, mobility and mental well-being

“Lymphoedema is restrictive not only the body, but also on a patient’s life. With innovative lymphatic surgery, we can help to significantly reduce this burden."

Treatment stages
1
Before the operation
A thorough clinical examination is carried out before a decision regarding liposuction. During an in-depth consultation, we will determine whether the operation is appropriate for you and whether it is likely to be successful in your individual case. We also discuss the possible risks, expectations and the treatment stages.
2
During the operation
Under general anaesthetic, the pathologically altered fatty tissue is gently suctioned out without causing additional damage to the lymph vessels. The procedure usually takes around 2–3 hours, depending on the severity of the lymphoedema and the size of the area to be treated.
3
After the operation
The affected limb will still need to be treated consistently with compression garments immediately after the operation. A noticeable improvement is usually apparent early on. Aftercare is provided on an outpatient basis in the form of consultations.
4
Possible risks and complications
As with any surgical procedure, swelling, bruising, infection or numbness may occur. Without consistent compression therapy, lymphoedema can increase again.
FAQs

FAQs

How will my arm or leg feel after liposuction?

Immediately after the operation, the affected area is usually significantly slimmer and feels lighter. Temporary swelling or a feeling of tightness may be experienced, but this will subside over time. Many patients find the change to be a noticeable relief.

Do I still need to keep wearing compression stockings after the operation?

Yes, absolutely. Even after liposuction, compression remains a central component of the treatment. This is the only way to ensure long-term treatment success and prevent the swelling from recurring.

Is liposuction a one-time treatment or does it need to be repeated?

In many cases, a single procedure is sufficient to significantly reduce the excess tissue. However, in cases of very severe lymphoedema, it may be advisable to carry out the treatment in several stages. We will discuss your specific case during the consultation.
