What is scar prevention?
Surgery always leaves scars – but how they look depends largely on individual healing. In some people, the tissue reacts with excessive or irregular scarring, which can have both functional and aesthetic consequences.
Targeted scar prevention can have a positive effect on healing – both before the operation (pre-operatively) and immediately afterwards (post-operatively).
We promote even, smooth scar formation using methods such as silicone ointments, collagen stimulators, CO₂ lasers and oxygen therapy.
About the treatment
Treatment can be carried out on a case-by-case basis either before or after planned surgery, depending on the risk, skin type and scar. The aim is to prevent excessive scar tissue and allow the skin to heal as naturally as possible.
Typical treatment options
- Silicone ointment or silicone plaster: For moisture regulation and scar smoothing
- CO₂ laser treatment: For scar prevention in high-risk skin (e.g. after breast surgery)
- Collagen stimulators: Activate the skin’s natural regeneration
- Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: Promotes cell healing (pre-operative)
- Microneedling or PRP: For prominent early-stage scars to improve skin texture
When is it recommended?
- Before planned procedures known to have poor scar healing
- After surgery, as soon as the wound has healed (usually 2 weeks after surgery)
- In cases of genetic predisposition to hypertrophic scars or keloids
- To improve the aesthetic result (e.g. after breast or abdominal surgery)

FAQs
When should I commence scar treatment?
In general, scar treatment should be started as early as possible. Treatment with silicone ointment can even be commenced between operations. CO₂ laser treatment should be started as soon as the wound has healed. This is usually the case two weeks after surgery. Collagen stimulators or hyperbaric oxygen therapy can even be started before surgery.
